About Captain Courageous
Captain Courageous is a charity raising funds to assist with research into the cause, and hopefully potential cure, for children suffering from Bone Marrow Failure Diseases.
In partnership with Hanson Institute, we are setting up a 3-4 year Research project into the causes of this debilitating disease; to do this we need to raise AU$1,000,000.
The Research Project
The Hanson Institute collaborating with the Department of Haematology, WCH and with the Captain Courageous fund support, will investigate the nature of the deficiency in blood cell production in bone marrow failure, focusing on why critical blood-producing cells that reside in bone marrow are unable to make the large numbers of blood cells required for a healthy blood and immune system.
They will also use recombinant DNA technology to search for genes and proteins that can restore the blood producing capacity of disease cells, thus providing new clues into how blood cell production is controlled and possibly opening up new avenues for therapy.
Your donation will make a difference.
Captain Courageous was founded in 2010 by the Bond Family. Jeff and Jessica Bond’s youngest son, Angus, was born in April 2008 and at only eight weeks was diagnosed with Diamond Black-Fan Anemia (DBA), one of the rarest Bone Marrow Failure Diseases. There are only a few hundred people in the world with this disease - all have bone marrow that does not produce red blood cells.
There is no known cure and Angus relies on regular blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks to survive.
